Chrome Beta adds universal image search, new gestures for tabs and zooming

Chrome Beta has just received a notable update that changes many of the usage and gesture paradigms in the browser. Most notable are the new ways to switch tabs — a swipe down on the toolbar expands the tab switcher (previously only revealed with a tap of the tab button), and swipe left or right along the toolbar to switch between open tabs. This is a far more intuitive way to manage your tabs, and completely prevents accidental tab switching when scrolling pages.

For navigating the Chrome Beta menu, you can now tap the overflow menu button and keep your finger pressed, sliding down the menu options and releasing your finger on the one you'd like to select. Google has also implemented a new one-finger zooming paradigm that is most memorable from Google Maps — double tap the screen and hold the second tap to either slide up or down to zoom in or out on the page.

Other notable features in this release include universal image search (long press any image and you'll have to option to search Google by that image), access to device motion for developers and more media and graphics API support. If you're willing to put up with frequent changes and some instability and exchange for the latest features, you can grab a download of the latest Chrome Beta at the Play Store link below.

THE FLY GEYSER

The Fly Geyser, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser, is a small man-made geothermal geyser, located in Washoe County, Nevada, and besides spitting water up to 5 feet into the air, it strikes you with beautiful vibrant colors, making the whole landscape look like a painting. The geyser actually developed by mistake from a leaking geothermal well, which was first drilled back in 1916. Sometime in the 1960s the geothermally heated water found a crack and erupted. It has been spewing gushes of hot water ever since.

The colored rock itself has been growing and forming from the dissolved minerals, which continue accumulating and thus shape the travertine mound around the geyser. The beautiful colors form due to the thermophilic algae. As the geyser is located on a private ranch and has its owner, it’s hidden from the viewers behind a high fence and a locked gate with spikes on top of it.

“This weird and unearthly landscape could have existed somewhere on Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io….Such unearthly landscapes are rare on Earth, but they exist. Maybe this helps to imagine how Earth might have looked like at its very beginning. Heat and sulfur resistant bacteria feed on the boiling water of the geyser. Just like in the beginning of life on Earth,” says photographer Christian Klepp. Wonder how owning something as amazing as this feels!

Riptide GP 2 makes a splash in Google Play

Chances are you've played Riptide GP on your Android. If you haven't, you've surely heard others rave about it (it's a staff favorite around here) and should have probably checked it out before now. C'est la vie. The good news is that the sequel is out, and it keeps everything great from the original and adds multiplayer and game options that make it my new favorite.

Vector Unit has outdone themselves. The same great watercraft action you loved in Riptide GP is there, along with multiplayer, Google+ login and cloud sync, and customization options for your vehicles like we see in other high-end racing games. You earn credits by competing in races, and use those credits to buy performance improvements for your existing ride or save them up to buy an all new, and hopefully better one from the store. Of course there is an in-app purchase mechanism, but by no means is it necessary to buy credits -- winning them is far too fun.

The multiplayer and social aspect is also great. Race against up to three of your friends in real-time through Google+, and if you have more than one Android the cloud sync keeps track of your progress flawlessly. My wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying Riptide GP 2 and the multiplayer fun, and I'm pretty sure you will, too.

Riptide GP 2 will play well on any high-end Android device, but playing on a Tegra-powered system really shines. Riptide GP 2 is the first game you'll want to buy if you have ordered a Shield. It is that much fun.

Rotating Tower, Dubai, UAE

Architect Dr. David Fisher is the creator of the world’s first building in motion – the revolutionary Dynamic Tower. It will adjust itself to the sun, wind, weather and views by rotating each floor separately.
This building will never appear exactly the same twice.
It is amazing but you will have the choice of waking up to sunrise in your bedroom and enjoying sunsets over the ocean at dinner.
In addition to being such an incredible engineering miracle it will produce energy for itself and even for other buildings because it will have wind turbines fitted between each rotating floor. So an 80-story building will have up to 79 wind turbines, making it a true green power plant.

The Dynamic Tower in Dubai will be 1,380 feet (420 meters) tall, 80 floors, apartments will range in size from 1,330 square feet (124 square meters), to Villas of 12,900 square feet (1,200 square meters) complete with a parking space inside the apartment. It will consist of offices, a luxury hotel,  residential apartments, and the top 10 floors will be for luxury villas located in a prime location in Dubai.
The Dynamic Tower in Dubai will be the first skyscraper to be entirely constructed in a factory from prefabricated parts. So instead of some 2000 workers, only 680 will be sufficient. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2010.

A Colorful Walk: Wisteria Tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Gardens, Japan

Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu, Japan (about a 4 hour drive from Tokyo) is where you will find this pastel-colored fairytale tunnel.
The gardens are home to about 150 Wisteria flowering plants spanning 20 different species (white, blue, purple, violet-blue and pink). This is the reason why the “tunnel” is so colorful and graceful.

The best time of the year to go from late April to mid May (depends on the weather each year). The peak is normally at end of April to the Golden Week. Not every year wisteria bloom so magnificently. To get to the garden from JR Yahata station, take Nishitetsu bus #56 and get off at Kawachi Elementary School. Then walk 10-15 min to the garden. It is difficult to imagine Kawachi Fuji Garden any other way but in full bloom, yet according to Atlas Obscura, visiting the place outside the mentioned time period will lead you to a  “disheartening mass of lifeless, twisted branches”. If you had the chance to walk along this flower-covered pathway, feel free to drop a line and tell us how it felt!

tunnel of love

This gorgeous long, leafy tunnel looks like a green dream or a scene from a film - but it can actually be found deep in the forests of Ukraine. Located near the town of Kleven, this luscious green tunnel provides passage for a private train that provides wood to a local factory. Measuring 1.8 miles long, the unusual rail route in Eastern Europe is also a popular spot for lovers' promises.

We love seeing natural architecture here at Inhabitat, and the leafy green Kleven train tunnel is a beautiful example of what happens when nature is allowed to grow freely around manmade infrastructure. The tunnel was made over many years as the passing train molded the trees’ lines. The train turned a luscious piece of woodland into a unique passageway as it traveled back and forth 3 times a day over several years.

In addition to serving as a train route, the tunnel is used by lovers to make a wish – it is said that if they are sincere in their love, their wishes will come true. If you are out and about Ukraine, don’t miss this fantastic green passageway – whether you are with a loved one, or on your own.

Hidden Underwater River Flowing Under the Ocean in Mexico

Located in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, there’s a secret underwater river called Cenote Angelita (Spanish for Little Angel) that can be found after a 10 to 15 minute drive south of Tulum. It is arguably the most unique formation of this kind: a thin layer of hydrogen sulfate separates the saltwater from the fresh water above it, allowing scuba divers to swim along this underwater creation, which looks a lot like a regular river would on the ground. There are even fallen trees and leaves on both sides of the “shores”, making this seascape look all the more surreal!

Cenotes are actually deep natural pits, or sinkholes, characteristic of Mexico, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath.

“From the surface, you look down and all you can see is deep blue water. At about 18m you begin to see what looks like a strange wispy bottom appearing below with a few ghostly, bare limbed tree trunks and branches sticking out. As it becomes clearer you begin to feel the first effects of narcosis at the same time as you see an expanse of wispy fog below. At the top of the cloud you stop and look around, everything appears surreal and a spooky feeling takes over amplified by the effects of the nitrogen in your brain,” describe Maya Diving, offering scuba diving trips to Angelita.

UNDER WATER WELDING

The Welding is an unavoidable process of modern engineering – civil, electrical, mechanical, automobiles, marine aeronautical – in all branches. It is used in fabrications and erections in infrastructures and installations. It joins metals or thermoplastics. The Hyperbaric welding OR UNDER WATER WELDING is the process of welding at elevated pressures, normally in underwater. It is of 2 types DRY & WET Welding. The Hyperbaric welding can either take place wet in the water itself OR dry inside. Here a specially constructed positive pressure enclosure is used and hence it is called dry welding. Similarly Hyperbaric welding term used in dry environment & underwater welding term used as in wet environment. The hyperbaric welding is used to repair damaged ships, under water pipe line & etc.

The fact that electric arc could operate was known for over a 100 years. The first ever underwater welding was carried out by British Admiralty – Dockyard for sealing leaking ship rivets below the water line.
Underwater welding is an important tool for underwater fabrication works. In 1946, special waterproof electrodes were developed in Holland by ‘Van der Willingen’. In recent years the number of offshore structures including oil drilling rigs, pipelines, platforms are being installed significantly. Some of these structures will experience failures of its elements during normal usage and during unpredicted occurrences like storms, collisions. Any repair method will require the use of underwater welding.

CLASSIFICATION OF UNDERWATER WELDING
The Underwater welding can be classified as:
1) Wet Welding: In wet welding the welding is performed underwater, directly exposed to the wet environment.
2) Dry Welding: In dry welding, a dry chamber is created near the area to be welded and the welder does the job by staying inside the chamber

COMPONENTS OF WATER WELDING
Electrode Holder - This new generation compression type welding stinger is engineered with features that let you know it’s from Broco. Lightweight, durable and designed to hold the electrode at the optimum angle to reduce diver fatigue. The new BR-21... Setting the wet welding standard.

Water Resistant Electrodes - The fundamental process of welding underwater does not differ from welding on land. An electrode carrying a direct current creates an arc of electricity. That arc is then applied to melt the target metal. The difference is that the electrodes used underwater are waterproof. Extra insulation around the connections ensure that the current will be able to generate the arc and not degrade the copper wiring. Doing this underwater presents a new set of risks. Both the risk of electrocution and the technical difficulty of maintaining the electrical arc underwater, is the reason why direct currents are used instead of alternating currents.

line diagram

The power source should be a direct current machine rated at 300 or 400 amperes. Motor generator welding machines are most often used for underwater welding in the wet. The welding machine frame must be grounded to the ship. The welding circuit must include a positive type of switch, usually a knife switch operated on the surface and commanded by the welder-diver. The knife switch in the electrode circuit must be capable of breaking the full welding current and is used for safety reasons. The welding power should be connected to the electrode holder only during welding. Direct current with electrode negative (straight polarity) is used. Special welding electrode holders with extra insulation against the water are used. The underwater welding electrode holder utilizes a twist type head for gripping the electrode. It accommodates two sizes of electrodes. The electrode types used conform to AWS E6013 classification. The electrodes must be waterproofed. All connections must be thoroughly insulated so that the water cannot come in contact with the metal parts. If the insulation does leak, seawater will come in contact with the metal conductor and part of the current will leak away and will not be available at the arc. In addition, there will be rapid deterioration of the copper cable at the point of the leak.

Android Quick App: Wind-up Knight

Stop what you're doing and download Wind-up Knight for Android.

Wind-up Knight is a side-scroller that's reminscient of Super Mario Brothers -- you'll be collecting coins while dispatching creatures, all in the name of saving a princess. But it's not a mere two-dimensional side-scroller -- this sucker's got depth. And the graphics, while simple, also don't overpower the gameplay, a problem we've seen in other games. The controls are simple as well. Your character runs on his own (hint: You'll need to go left sometimes), and you're left iwth jumping and rolling and attacking.

Wind-up Knight is a free game, but you'll need to collect weapons and armor along the way. And you can upgrade as quickly as you want, thanks to in-app purchasing. Want a bad-ass sword without having to save up currency? You can buy 10,000 Note for a $9.99US. Of course, that's the trick, right? You'll likely end up spending far more within the game than you would if you paid $1.99, or $2.99 -- heck, we'd probably easily go $5 for Wind-up Knight -- up front. But on the other hand, with 50 levels and great gameplay, you're getting your money's worth. And you don't actually have to purchase the more-expensive weapons to complete the game. But it's very, very tempting.

One downside of all that in-app purchasing, though, is that you can't switch devices. If you upgrade on a tablet, you won't have those weapons and armor on a phone, unless you repurchase them. (Hopefully Google does something about that at some point.

Anyhoo, we've distracted you long enough. Hit up the download links and check out our hands-on video after the break.
